The MINT is a Kenyan organization working in the education sector under ABCA Africa. We exist for children, and we work with schools, communities, and children’s homes all over the country. Our major focus is strengthening English language skills in the three key areas of reading, writing, and speaking. We firmly believe that when we build a strong language foundation in the early years of learning, then we are ensuring a higher chance of success in any career path chosen.
English is an international language and will remain so in the foreseeable future. It is also the language of formal instruction in our learning institutions. However, a number of studies in Kenya have shown that there is a very low level of English language proficiency in many of our primary schools. Articulation and comprehension are key areas of concern, chiefly because children are rarely reading outside of the normal academic study for exams. Yet, reading is strongly related to the ability for self-expression and excellent writing. Reading is also known to enhance cognitive abilities, reduce anxiety, and promote the ability to understand various topics.
At The MINT, we recognize that a child cannot progress well in their education path if the language foundation is weak. This is why we encourage regular reading, creative writing, and storytelling exercises. Our programs are designed with this in mind—to achieve the greatest excellence possible in English language proficiency. This eventually becomes a valuable asset later on when doing IELTS or TOEFL exams in order to pursue studies outside the country.
